You can shoot for Kailasa's tracks!

By Hindustan Times

Mumbai, Feb. 27 -- Singer Kailash Kher and his band, Kailasa enthralled Mumbaikars with a scintillating concert this weekend. The show, which was a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, saw the 'Allah ke bandey...' singer belt out popular songs of the world-renowned Pakistani musician, including 'Tere bin nahi lagda dil mera dholna..' and 'Kinna sona...'.

Kher, who is known to chat with his audience between songs, admits that sharing experiences with them makes it a more personal experience for him. He explains, "In India, it is very rare that people pay R3,000 for a concert. So, it feels good to know that you have true fans in the audience, which makes sharing personal trivia even more of a personal experience."

Recently, he had posted on his fan page, requesting people to create videos of songs from his album for free. "I wish to make videos of all songs from Kailasa's album, Rangeele. I am quite happy with the response my request has received. While videos of three songs have already been made, the fourth is on its way. It's being made by students from a film institute as a diploma project," he says, adding, "We will soon launch a contest on our Facebook page, where people will be asked to make videos of the songs 'Katha gaan...' and 'Ujaale baant lo...'.

The one that receives the maximum 'likes' will be the official video for that song." The singer, who has sung for upcoming films Agent Vinod, Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum and Prakash Jha's Chakravyuh, will be travelling to Pakistan and Bangladesh with the band next month. He also plans to head for an international tour with Kailasa in April.

Ask him if there are any plans to collaborate with any international artiste, and he says, "Collaboration requires a lot of time and commitment. I'm afraid I don't have that kind of time right now. I'll do that when the time is right."

Bengal loot and rape case: Two more arrested

Kolkata:  Two more people were arrested on Saturday in the Katwa train loot and rape case in West Bengal. Nayan Seikh and Farid Seikh, accused of raping the woman when she resisted looting, were arrested last night at Chouhatta village in the Labhpur police station area in Birbhum district, they said.

Four people have been arrested in the case so far.

A woman was allegedly gang-raped after she tried to put up a resistance during a robbery attempt in a train near Katwa in the Burdwan district of West Bengal.

Two days after the incident, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had stated the medical records of the woman showed no rape and the entire incident was concocted. The statement attracted criticism from all sides. Ms Banerjee had also said the woman's husband was a CPM sympathiser. The woman has been a widow for the past 11 years.

The incident occurred at around 7:15 pm last Saturday when the train was passing through the Ahmedpur-Katwa section between the Pachandi and Ambalgram stations. A person allegedly approached the guard and asked him to apply brakes, saying a passenger had fallen on the tracks. The guard alerted the driver, who stopped the train. When he got off the train, a gang armed with guns and choppers surrounded him, pointed a gun to his head and snatched his walkie-talkie, mobile phone and other valuables. They then proceeded to loot the passengers on the train, most of who were daily commuters.

The alleged victim, a widow, told the police that when she tried to object, she was dragged out of the train and raped by five men on the railway tracks.

"They took away jewellery from my hands first, then they tried taking my earrings. I resisted so they started beating me. Then they took away my earrings. They also took away Rs. 1000 from me. Then they dragged me out of the train and raped me. Then one of them asked the others to leave me as I was crying," the woman had said.

Can’t do stand-up comedy: Mahima Chaudhary

By Hindustan Times

After working on the film Gumnaam, in 2008, actor Mahima Chaudhary had nearly disappeared from the industry and public memory. However, she made a comeback of sorts last Saturday as Sachin Pilgaonkar’s co-judge on the kiddie stand-up show, Chote Miyan Season Three on Colors.

“Domestic responsibilities kept me away. My daughter is five years old now. Back then, she was too tiny for me to leave her with someone. Now, she’s a big girl, and I know I can take time off to do my own thing,” says Mahima, adding, “The reason I took up this show is because it doesn’t have a crazy schedule. And being at work doesn’t seem like work. I’m surrounded by children. and it’s fun.”

She admits she has received offers from many reality shows, but explains that she didn’t accept any, either because the concepts didn’t work or the schedules were too demanding. Here, she doesn’t shoot for more than two or three days in a week.

“I know nothing about comedy. These kids can give anyone a run for their money. Their acts blew my socks off,” she says, adding, “I’m a motherly judge. I can’t chop off their marks cunningly. So, I usually mark the kids with help from Sachinji. He has helped me develop better perspective.” So, does she plan to hop on to the ha-ha brigade and join a reality show as a contestant? “I’m not cut out for that,” Mahima giggles. “Before I started judging this show, I thought I could pull of comedy. But after seeing them, I have to admit, I’ve lost the confidence to put a stand-up act together.”

Department will be RGV's most stylish film: Rana Daggubati

By Hindustan Times

Ram Gopal Varma's past few projects have failed to rock the box office, but actor Rana Daggubati, who has teamed up with the director in Department, is confident that the film will turn out to be one of his most stylish movies.

"Ramu (Varma) dabbles in a lot of genres of films. He is very good with his work, and has a wonderful storytelling pattern, which is most often trendsetting. His film Satya broke stereotype, and Company gave Vivek Oberoi such a great launchpad...I think Department will be one of his most stylish film ever shot," Rana told IANS.

In Department, the southern star will be seen as a grungy policeman - a role that was earlier reserved for Abhishek Bachchan. The film's characters include a don, a gangster, a gangster-turned-politician, and shootout specialists. No wonder it was exciting for Rana to work in it!

"I think Ramu is one filmmaker who has complete understanding of the subject he tackles in his films and likes to accumulate extensive knowledge before venturing out into each theme. Be it underworld or any other subject, his films speak of the research he does.

"Usually Ramu shoots his films quickly, but he has spent a lot of time on Department, which is great. It's a project close to him, and it has been a fantastic experience working with him," he added.

Rana, who made his Bollywood debut in Dum Maro Dum, will be seen with Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt in the movie, releasing May 18.

He is also upbeat about the action sequences in the film.

"Department is a heavy-duty action film. I trained a lot for it, and the training was just in the gym. It had a lot to do with marshall arts, and I easily had 10 to 15 action sequences. So it was fun," said the 27-year-old.

Meanwhile he has also been occupied with the dubbing of Telugu film Naa Ishtam, in which he is paired opposite the recently-married Genelia D'Souza.

"I play a young, brash boy in Naa Ishtam....very different from Department, in which each line that my character says, is measured. Naa Ishtam is a commercial project...I am playing my age, and it was wonderful to work with Genelia. She is way more experienced than I am, but we had a great time," said the actor, who enjoys the diverse content offered to him.

"I made an unconventional debut with Dum Maro Dum. As a launch film, it was different as opposed to others, who would go for a romantic project. So I am happy," he added.

Supreme Court admits a petition on Sonia Gandhi's foreign origion

New Delhi:  The Supreme Court today admitted a petition questioning whether a person of foreign origin can hold public office.

A bench comprising Justices H L Dattu and C K Prasad also favoured expediating hearing on the issue which was raised by Rashtriya Mukti Morcha (RMM), a socio-political organisation.

RMM has filed an appeal challenging a Delhi High Court's verdict which had dismissed the petition filed against Congress President Sonia Gandhi on the grounds that Sonia Gandhi being of Italian origin, she is not entitled to hold any constitutional post.

The RMM, in its petition, had taken exception to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi being invited to form government at the Centre by the then President in 1999 after NDA lost a no-confidence motion in Parliament.

The apex court had in April, 2007 issued notices to the Centre and the Election Commission on the issue.

However, the Centre did not file any affidavit and asked the apex court to post the matter for final hearing.

The Election Commission had said that its stand will be the same as that of the Centre.

Mamata's nephew in court today for slapping traffic cop

Kolkata:  Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Akash Banerjee, who was arrested here yesterday for allegedly slapping a traffic policeman, will be presented in court today. He has been charged with a non-bailable offence under section 353(b) of the Indian Penal Code (assault of a police officer on duty).

Police officials claim that the Chief Minister herself ordered the arrest of her nephew. Seeking to make a very embarrassing incident look a little better, a minister in the Mamata Banerjee government said it was a "small incident and the chief minister had demonstrated raj dharma by ordering the arrest of her nephew."
Yesterday, Mr Banerjee's car was stopped in Khidderpore for violating a traffic rule - unconfirmed reports say the car was being driven on the wrong side of the road. The CM's nephew was in the car with two friends. When a traffic sergeant stopped the vehicle, Mr Banerjee and the two other passengers got out of the car and allegedly abused and beat him. People who witnessed the incident claim that Mr Banerjee shouted, "Don't you know who I am? I am the chief minister's nephew."
The three passengers were taken to the Watgunge police station. After the link to the chief minister was made clear, Mr Banerjee and the others were allowed to leave without any case being filed against them. Later, after people of the area raised a hue and cry and the local media reported on the incident, a case was registered and Mr Banerjee was arrested.

Baby Falak taken out from ICU, shifted to children's ward at AIIMS

New Delhi:  Two-year-old  Falak, who was brought to hospital in a battered state, was today shifted from an ICU to the children's ward after doctors at AIIMS found her medical condition stable.

Doctors at the AIIMS Trauma Centre, attending on her since the past 45 days, said Falak will be discharged soon if she continues to show improvement in her medical condition. "We shifted her to the ward today. She is doing fine. We have removed the plaster from her hands and she is moving her limbs. She cries badly when anyone goes close to her. Another two to three days and we can declare her fit to be discharged. Sadly, we do not have the legal right to discharge her as she has no takers yet," said Dr Deepak Agarwal, who has been attending on the girl child since she was admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre on January 18.

Moved by Baby Falak's plight, Indians as well people from the US and Canada have approached doctors, expressing their desire to adopt her. "We have received a lot of mails but we have no right to hand her over to anyone. It all depends on the government
authorities to decide for her," Dr Agarwal said.

Baby Falak was brought to the hospital with severe head injuries, broken arms, bite marks all over her body and cheeks branded with hot iron. Doctors have conducted five life saving surgeries on her. "Even if we discharge her, the tracheostomy and the food
pipe will stay in her body to help her," Dr Agarwal said.

Hollywood trainer wants to work with Farhan Akhtar

By Hindustan Times

Hollywood trainer Ed Chow, who trained celebrities like Clive Owen and Lucas Till, says he would love to work with Farhan Akhtar, who has been training hard for his next film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. "I was really lucky to meet Aishwarya Rai when she was working on The Last Legion with Colin Firth. There are actors like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Sara Khan. And I'd like to work with Farhan Akhtar - I've seen some of his work and I really liked it," Chow said in an e-mail interaction.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is a biopic on legendary athlete Milkha Singh and Farhan is currently undergoing special training for his lead role in the movie. Similarly American actress Lynn Collins had to go through a fixed regime for her role as Dejah Thoris in John Carter, releasing in India March 9.

John Carter is about a man who gets transported to Mars and gets caught between 12-foot-tall barbarians. Collins plays a princess and her role was quite physical with a lot of wirework, stunts and sword fights. So a lot of preparation was required from her end, says Chow.

"It was a three-month routine with a variety of one- to two-hour-long training sessions, five to six times per week. It comprised taekwondo, fight training, boxing and kick-boxing on pads and focus-mitts for cardio.

"We worked on ab-workouts and core to prepare Lynn for the wirework she needed to do for stunts, and free-weights and machines focussing on different parts of the body each session. We also did a lot of plyometrics to make her legs strong," shared Chow.

The celebrity trainer says there was added focus on Collins' muscles, which made his job tougher.

"(Her character) Dejah Thoris has a lot of tattoos on her body and they were painted on Lynn every day of filming. We needed the muscles to actually show through the tattoos; so we focussed on getting a lot of definition in her muscles," he said.

According to Chow, Collins "was very focussed herself".

"She worked out every day on her days off and most days on set as well. It wasn't necessary as she had that down herself," he said.

So what is it like training popular faces?

"They are great to train. Celebrities are very highly motivated, extremely focussed and extremely hardworking. They will work very, very hard to get what they need for a part," he said.

What about a few general fitness tips for people who wish to get fit figures like celebrities?

"Fitness is actually about doing something regularly, every single week. It's about making the time to do something - like an exercise or a sport that you enjoy.

"Diet is important too - eating healthy food, small portions many times a day rather than three big meals a day and keeping carbohydrates down. I do believe in satisfying food cravings but it needs to be in proportion. So if you have a sweet tooth, it's okay to have a small piece of chocolate, but you can't have a whole chocolate cake," he said.

Vidya Balan face of Victoria's Indian Film Festival

By Hindustan Times

Actor Vidya Balan has been roped in as the brand ambassador of Victoria's Indian Film Festival to be held in Melbourne this year. "I am delighted to be named as the brand ambassador for the Indian Film Festival in Melbourne. I love the format of the festival and the wide range of films
screened," Vidya said in a statement.

"It not only showcases the best of Indian cinema but also provides a platform for young, upcoming film makers through its short film competition," she said.

"When I was in Melbourne, I was smitten by the city and its love for films and its multi-cultural spirit. I am sure the festival will contribute greatly to add to that spirit," Vidya said.

Premier Ted Baillieu said strengthening ties with Indian cinema is a chance for Victoria to showcase what they have to offer in the arts.

"India's burgeoning film industry offers opportunities for Victorian co-production projects that build on our state's strengths in the creative arts," Baillieu said.

"Our government seeks to promote Victoria as a place that has the skills and infrastructure to work in film production, and where film producers can find a variety of people who can speak a range of languages and possess a cultural understanding."

"The festival will celebrate Indian cinema and create bonds of greater understanding and experience between the communities of Victoria and India," he added.

The 10-day festival will take place in mid-2012 and showcase the depth and diversity of the Indian film industry.

Louise Asher, minister for innovation, services and small business, said India is one of the largest film industries in the world and it makes sense to develop ties between our film industries.

"The festival complements a range of initiatives to develop ties between the Victorian and Indian film industries, including a Victoria/India Co-production Initiative which will see ten Victorians travel to FICCI Frames in Mumbai in March," Asher said.

"The initiative will also support up to three Victorian companies to develop a feature film, television or digital media project as a joint venture with a production entity based in India," she added.

Andhra speaker disqualifies 16 Jagan loyalists

Hyderabad:  Ending the long suspense, the Andhra Pradesh assembly speaker on Friday disqualified 16 rebel lawmakers belonging to the ruling Congress party who were loyal to Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy.

The speaker has also accepted the resignation of another Jagan loyalist Shoba Nagi Reddy of Praja Rajyam Party (PRP).

A statement about the disqualification was released from the office of speaker Nandendla Manohar on Friday night.

Congress had sought the disqualification of the legislators for violating the party whip and voting in favour of opposition Telugu Desam Party's no-confidence motion against the government in the assembly last December.

With the speaker's move, 17 seats in 294-member house have fallen vacant. The election commission will now initiate the process to fill the vacancies by holding by-elections within six months.

I’m making a sci-fi film: Omi Vaidya

By Hindustan Times

Actor Omi Vaidya tasted success with his debut film — 3 Idiots. Now, Chatur, Vaidya’s screen name from 3 Idiots, is planning to turn director. “I am very interested in science fiction and wrote a script in that genre. It’s a sci-fi thriller. It will be a heavily plot-based film. Of course, I will
‘Bollywoodise’ it,” he says, adding, “It’s a small budget film and will go on the floor by the end of the year hopefully.”

So, will he cast any of his co-actors in his directorial debut? “I certainly will. But they won’t be high-profile stars. Rather, they will be character actors, who are quite talented. I can’t reveal any names yet.”

Now that Vaidya has been working in Hindi cinema from some time, has he become comfortable with the language? “I’m pretty comfortable in Hindi. I think my Hindi is as good as that of a 5th-6th standard student,” he says.

Vaidya has even tried his hands at reality TV. He anchored Zee TV’s Chhote Ustaad in 2010. “I did the show because it was about kids and I love children.

Sometimes, I feel my maturity is at their level,” he says. However, Vaidya feels Indian TV still has a long way to go. “Indian TV soaps are all about the present. They don’t think about the future unlike the West where they make expensive shows that are high on quality,” he muses.

Raja asks Supreme Court to review cancellation of 122 licences

New Delhi:  Former Telecom Minister A Raja has asked the Supreme Court to review its decision that cancelled 122 mobile network licences issued by him. The verdict, delivered on February 2, has caused panic attacks for India Inc; it also has the government searching for exigent clarifications. Mr Raja said that the principles of natural justice were not followed because he was not allowed to present his case to the Supreme Court. Mr Raja has been in jail for over a year for allegedly violating all rules as he assigned those licences to companies that he reportedly conspired with.

The government also filed a petition today suggesting that the judiciary is getting involved with policy-making, a prerogative of the government. In its verdict that nullified Mr Raja's decisions, the court had ruled that spectrum and other natural resources cannot be allotted on a first-come-first-serve basis, because that guideline is "fundamentally flawed." The court then ordered the new telecom licences to be sold on the basis of an auction. The government's review petition today said policy involves the balancing of "different values and considerations." This job, it stressed, belongs to the executive and "it is not permissible for the court to take this exercise upon itself... both for the reason that it is not its role to do so and it does not have the expertise to do so."

The government has been at pains to make clear that it is not challenging the cancellation of the 122 licences. But it contented today that that there cannot be a flat rule that in all cases, natural resources must go to the highest bidder. In the case of telecom licences in 2008, it said, the government was focusing on making cellular services available at the cheapest rates for Indians in not just cities, but semi-urban and rural areas.

Earlier this week, Tata Teleservices filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the cancellations of its licences in three circles; several other telecoms are expected to follow suit.

Another petition filed yesterday by the government explains that the process of reallocating the cancelled licences will likely take 400 days. In its order, the court had told the government to complete the process within 120 days or four months. The Supreme Court's order makes the 122 licences invalid starting June 2. The government in its petition filed yesterday states that because an auction cannot be held by then, nearly 70 million cellphone subscribers will be left in the lurch (Customers who have been with an operator for more than 90 days are entitled to switch immediately to a different mobile company).

The government also wants the Supreme Court to reconsider another verdict it delivered recently related to the telecom scam. On January 31, the court said that the Prime Minister's office was wrong to have kept Subramanian Swamy waiting for 18 months when he asked for permission for the prosecution of Mr Raja on corruption charges.  Because Mr Raja was then a union minister, the Prime Minister's consent had to be sought for proceedings against him. Mr Swamy is Janata Party president; his different petitions on the telecom scam have been partly responsible for the mammoth investigation that has been launched into how licences were fraudulently allotted.

The Supreme Court ruled in Mr Swamy's favour and said that Parliament should consider introducing a four-month deadline for any request seeking sanction of the prosecution of a government servant. In its review petition, filed yesterday, the government has said that sanction cannot be given before a court takes cognizance of the charges against the government servant in question. So the government is seeking review of the court decision upholding the right to get sanction for prosecution of public servants even before a complaint is filed.

Soldier on tank dies in Chennai after driver crashes into wall

Chennai:  In a freak accident, a soldier perched over a T-90 battle tank was killed when its driver lost control and dashed against a concrete structure in Chennai today.

A concrete slab fell on the tank following the mishap, killing the soldier and injuring another at the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE).

"It is an unfortunate accident. The tank was taken out for testing. The driver was inside the tank and two others were sitting outside," a senior official told IANS.

"The driver lost control and dashed against a concrete column. A concrete slab fell on the tank killing one person and injuring the other," he said.

The dead man was identified as Harish.

Another source told IANS: "The tanks are parked inside a garage. The vehicle was taken out for a test run when the accident happened.

"It seems one of the steering sticks of the tank got stuck and the driver lost control of the vehicle."

The injured soldier has been admitted in a military hospital.

T-90 is a Russian battle tank. India also manufacturers modified T-90 tanks at the Heavy Vehicles Factory here. These are called Bhishma.

40,000 Indians to be allowed to work in Europe, says report

London:  At least 40,000 Indians may be allowed to work in Europe, including 12,000 in Britain alone, under a secret trade plan between the European Union and New Delhi, a media report said, citing leaked documents.

The EU has proposed that 40,000 Indian workers will be admitted to Europe without any labour market test as part of the plan to boost export trade with New Delhi, the 'Daily Mail' reported, quoting a leaked copy of the EU/India Free Trade Agreement, which is due to be signed later this year.

Central to the agreement is the EU's offer on what is known as "Mode 4", which will allow Indian companies to bring temporary workers into the EU, the newspaper said.

According to the leaked papers, out of 40,000 Indians who would be allowed to work in Europe, Britain has been asked to take 12,000, which is 30 per cent of the total allocation, despite the UK making up 12 per cent of the EU's population. (Read: Britain may have to admit 12,000 Indian worker)

The 12,000 Indian migrants, who would be able to live and work in Britain for six months, will be in addition to people given visas under Britain's supposedly strict immigration cap, the newspaper said.

A large number of beneficiaries will be IT workers who already arrive in Britain from India in large numbers, the report added.

According to EU officials, in return for opening up the jobs market, countries such as Britain will be helped to land lucrative export deals.

The negotiations on the India deal -- which was first initiated by Former EU Trade Commissioner Lord Mandelson in 2007 and subsequently have been led by Business Department -- was going on in the shadows for years, the daily said.
