SRK-Katrina spotted shooting for YRF!

By Hindustan Times

Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif were spotted shooting for Yash Chopra's comeback film in London. While SRK looked old and exhausted in the leaked snaps from the film sets, Katrina wasn't clearly visible. However, the beauty is expected to look stunning as ever.

Shah Rukh Khan is romancing arch rival Salman Khan's ex-flame for the first time. His Rab Ne Banadi Jodi lady Anushka Sharma will also feature in the film.

"Katrina puts in a lot of effort to make her character look and sound believable. I'm working with Yashji after a long time and it's been a breeze," said the RA.One star.

SRK shoots for Yash Chopra's next in London.

Yash Chopra is returning to direction after a gap of seven years. He has directed Shah Rukh earlier in Darr (1993), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and Veer-Zaara (2004). These are also his last three directorial ventures.

The romantic film went on the floors on January 9. Details including the film's storyline and music are being kept under wraps as of now.

The much-awaited fim is set for a Diwali 2012 release. After RA.One, it will be SRK's second Diwali release in continuity.

SRK-Kat's chemistry
SRK gave a glimpse of his chemistry with Katrina at an award show where he raised eyeballs when he kissed the actor on her left cheek.

"We haven't become best friends but she's a nice girl to work with. And we never dig into the past (the popular Salman-SRK squabble)," he said.

Katrina is working with SRK and Salman (Ek Tha Tiger) in the same calendar year.

"I don't take work from one set to the other. Shah Rukh and Salman are my co-stars and I respect them equally and immensely," she said.

Murder case in Italy against marines who shot Kerala fishermen

Kochi:  The Italian government says that two of its marines, currently in a Kerala jail for shooting two fishermen from Kochi, will be tried for murder in Italy.  This is part of Italy's attempts to persuade India to release the marines who were arrested a few weeks ago.
The marines were on board an Italian merchant vessel en route from Dubai to Singapore.  They say they mistook a boat of fishermen for Somalian pirates and opened fire.  Two fishermen died.
India says because the incident took place within its waters, the marines must face a trial here according to Indian law.  Italy has disputed that, describing the arrests of the guards as coercive and unilateral.   A series of Italian delegates including the country's foreign minister have met with SM Krishna, Minister for External Affairs. They have stressed that as members of the Navy, the marines are entitled to immunity abroad, and should be tried in their home country.

The Kerala High Court is also hearing a case filed by the family of one of the men who was killed. His relatives have asked for a crore as compensation.  The lawyers representing the Italians have told the High Court that the Italian government has initiated criminal proceedings against the marines.   The murder charges against them mean they could face upto 21 years in prison, according to Italian law.

R3.5 lakh hung off movie hoarding!

By Hindustan Times

Mumbai, Feb. 29 -- If you were walking around Juhu yesterday, you might have realised that money doesn't grow on trees it hangs off billboards. To promote their upcoming release Paan Singh Tomar, production house UTV Motion Pictures risked losing R3.5 lakh in cash, which they strung up on a prominent hoarding opposite a Juhu coffee shop.

Confirming the news, Shikha Kapur, senior vicepresident of UTV Motion Pictures, says, "As Irrfan plays a robber in the film, we e film, we hought it would be a nice innoation in the outdoor advertising space. We are pegging it (the cash bounty) as Paan Singh's loot. "

The production house claims to have made the required arrangements to protect their stash, which was hoisted onto the poster opposite popular haunt Costa Coffee around noon. Shikha says, "In terms of security, there were people posted around the hoarding, though they were dressed in casual clothing."

The experiment only lasted for a brief spell, since the filmmakers didn't want the pile of cash to attract any unwanted trouble. "We only put it up for a couple of hours, and took it down by 3 pm. We are aware that we can't keep the money up there until the film releases," admits Shikha.

DN Nagar resident Rafiq Ahmed, who witnessed some adventurous opportunists scaling the billboard, says, "We saw a bag full of money hanging from the hoarding. We thought that it was fake, but when some people tried climbing the poles of the hoarding to get the money, we realised that it was real." Passer-by Sahil Patel stopped his car to get a better glimpse of the hoarding. "There was lots of excitement on the ground as people were looking up at the cash hanging there. I wish I knew how to climb," he says. In the Tighmanshu Dhuliadirected film, Irrfan Khan takes on the role of the real-life dacoit.

India rejects reports of US troops on its soil

New Delhi:  India has denied as "factually incorrect" a report that US special forces were stationed in the country as part of counter-terrorism cooperation.

Media reports quoted top Pentagon commander Admiral Robert Willard as telling a Congressional hearing on Thursday that US special forces teams were stationed in five South Asian countries, including India and Sri Lanka.

"The report is factually incorrect in so far as the reference to India is concerned," Indian defence ministry spokesman Sitanshu Kar said in a statement late on Friday.

"US special forces teams have never been stationed in India in the past, nor are such teams stationed in the country presently," Kar added.

The two democracies, however, have a regular military exchange programme with cross visits for training and joint drills by soldiers of one country to another.

In Colombo, the US embassy on Saturday denied stationing special forces in Sri Lanka.

"References in the press to US special forces being stationed in Sri Lanka are misleading," the embassy said in a statement.

However, it said members of the US military were assigned to work in the embassy in Colombo "as part of the bilateral engagement between the United States and Sri Lanka."

The US admiral had been quoted as saying that the move to station US forces in the South Asian countries was part of the counter-terrorism cooperation with these nations.

27 dead, one town 'gone' as tornadoes rip central US

Chicago:  Residents and rescue workers went house to house on Saturday in a desperate search for survivours after tornados ripped open the US heartland, killing 31 people and wiping out entire communities.

Even as stunned Americans grappled with the magnitude of the massive swath of destruction brought by Friday's twisters, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued new tornado warnings on Saturday for parts of Georgia and Florida, in the country's southeast.

Trucks and trees were tossed aside like playthings as deadly funnel clouds ravaged parts of six states in the US Midwest and South.

The images were surreal: a school bus smashed through the wall of a house, trucks thrown into lakes, solid brick homes reduced to rubble and wooden ones smashed into kindling, mobile homes flipped like tin cans.

At least 14 people were killed in Indiana, according to Governor Mitch Daniels, who stood amid the devastation in the town of Henryville early on Saturday.

"We're not unfamiliar with Mother Nature's wrath out here in Indiana, but this is about as serious as I've seen it in my years in this job," an emotional Daniels, wearing a camouflage jacket, told reporters.

"Lucky it wasn't worse," he said, adding that while early warning systems likely saved lives, it was a "heartbreaking" loss for families, and Indianans would come together to help neighbours cope.

Officials in Clark County, Indiana were scrambling to deal with widespread damage after roads were blocked by fallen trees and debris, and power and phone lines were knocked out.

The hardest hit was Marysville, and for all practical purposes the small town has ceased to exist, officials said.

"That's the information we have, that Marysville is no longer," US Senator Dan Coats of Indiana said in an interview with CNN.

The high school in Henryville suffered "quite a bit of damage," but luckily all the children were evacuated safely and only minor injuries -- some cuts and scrapes -- were reported, said sheriff department spokesman Chuck Adams.

Indiana activated 250 members of its National Guard, who used Black Hawk helicopters to reach hard-hit regions, the Indianapolis Star reported.

Meanwhile in Kentucky, the department of public health confirmed 14 fatalities there, with a total of 13 tornados roaring across the state.

Twisters smashed homes like matchsticks in and around the city of West Liberty, and 40 counties in the state suffered damage. Some 22,000 people were without power in the state.

"It's been a very difficult 24 hours in Kentucky," Kerri Richardson, the governor's communications director, told AFP.

Amateur video aired on CNN showed a gargantuan grey twister churning over West Liberty, as a woman loudly prayed "Oh God, take it away from us Lord!"

There were three deaths in the neighbouring state of Ohio, including a city councilwoman from the town of Moscow, an Emergency Management Agency official said.

A second round of searches for survivors began at daybreak in the southwest of the state, where communities reported widespread devastation, the official said.

Alabama's Madison county was also badly hit, with the weather service reporting "people trapped in rubble with injuries," houses destroyed, trees ripped from the ground and power lines down.

The latest wave of storms comes after a string of twisters killed 13 people earlier in the week.

The NWS had received 83 reports of tornadoes in eight states by Friday evening, bringing the week's total to 133, though not all were confirmed.

More could be on their way as a "particularly dangerous" tornado watch continued into Saturday in four states in a massive storm that also carried golf-ball sized hail.

The latest outbreak of tornados comes as people were still picking through rubble left behind by the twisters which struck six states on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The town of Harrisburg, Illinois was hardest hit on Wednesday, ripped apart by a deadly twister that stayed on the ground for miles, killing six people and injuring more than 100.

Some 545 people were killed by tornadoes in 2011, the deadliest tornado season since 1936 and the third worst on record.

This year tornados have come a bit early with the mild winter creating the right conditions for cold fronts to slam into warmer air.

"We knew it was going to be bad," said Angie Lese, a meteorologist with NWS. "All the ingredients came together for a significant outbreak."

10 big facts on ONGC share auction

New Delhi:

ONGC shares dipped 1.2% as bids for over 97 lakh shares were received up to 2.30 pm on Thursday. This accounts for about 2 per cent of the total planned sale of 42.77 crore shares. The bidding has picked up a bit after a slow start for the first two hours when bids for only over 35,000 shares were received. The government is offering to sell 5 per cent of its stake (42.77 crore shares) in the state-run oil explorer. The auction for the shares, which takes place today, will help the government raise over Rs 12,000 crore. The sale of ONGC shares is part of the government's divestment programme.

Here are 10 facts on the ONGC auction:

1) As of 2.30 pm, bids were received for 97,03,894 shares. The company's share price dipped 1.2  per cent after gaining 1 per cent in early morning trade. Institutional investors are likely to bid later and try to keep their bidding prices under wraps. In an auction, bidding typically intensifies towards the end of the trading session. A Reuters report said that State Bank of India, the largest public sector bank, could bid in for ONGC shares.

2) This is the biggest equity offering this year. The government's holding will come down to 69.14% from 74.14% currently post the share sale. The auction for 42.77 crore shares will start at 09:15 am and end at 3.30 pm. The floor price has been set at Rs 290 per share. The minimum bid quantity is one share (lot size of one share). Citi, JM, Nomura, DSP ML, Morgan Stanley and HSBC Securities are the investment bankers for the deal.

3) The government is selling part of its stake in ONGC to meet its divestment target of Rs 40,000 crore. The government is widely expected to miss its deficit target of 4.6 per cent of GDP for the current fiscal year ending March, partly due to its inability to meet the budget target for more than Rs 40,000 crore in state-company share sales. So far this fiscal year, the government has only raised about Rs 1,250 crore.

4) The government had earlier planned to sell ONGC shares through a public offering but that plan was scrapped last October after tepid response from investors amid weak equity markets. India's stock market posted its first annual fall in three years in 2011, losing nearly 25 percent. Shares in ONGC fell 20 percent in the same period. But the stock market has rebounded in 2012 and the BSE Sensex has climbed nearly 15 percent, with foreign funds scooping up beaten shares worth more than $7 billion.

5) Retail investors can participate but market participants say they will not be able to compete with big fund houses and institutions. That is because there will be no discounts and reservation for retail investors. Normally, 35 per cent of the shares in a public offer are reserved for small investors. "The only disappointment would be on the retail side because retail investors would not be able to participate... Usually retail investors get a discount but that's not happening," RS Sharma, Former CMD of ONGC told NDTV Profit on Wednesday.

6) So, who will buy: Big foreign funds, including sovereign funds from Abu Dhabi and Kuwait, have assured the government that they will buy the 5% stake, according to reports. Funds from Singapore and London have reportedly also informally underwritten the stake sale. Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) is also expected to bid in today's auction, according to the market buzz.

7) This is the first stake sale being done via auction route. Only last month, the Securities & Exchange Board of India (Sebi) allowed shareholders of the country's top 100 companies by market value to raise funds by auctioning their stakes through stock exchanges. Bankers said while investors would be able to participate in the auction in the same way as in the previously used follow-on share offering, the owner of a company would save significant cost and time in the auctioning process.

8) How does the auction work: Multiple orders from a single buyer shall be permitted. The indicative price & cumulative bid quantity shall be made available on exchanges at regular intervals. Allocation will be intimated to the bidding broker on T+1 basis.  Stock exchanges will collect 100% of the order value in cash. No single bidder other than MFs & insurance companies will be given more than 25 per cent shares.

9) Valuation:  Rs 290 is a very good price. The stock is valued at Rs 330 on 2013 earnings per share (EPS), which is 9-times FY 13 price earnings, Sanjiv Prasad, Executive Director and Co-Head of Kotak Institutional Equities told NDTV Profit yesterday.  The multiples can be re-rated to 10-11- times given the optimistic outlook in the markets, he added.

10) A successful auction in ONGC shares will pave the way for divestment in other public sector companies like heavy engineering goods firm BHEL and steel major SAIL.

Wreck of fishing vessel near Kollam located

Kochi:  Two days after the Directorate General of Shipping ordered a probe into the hit-and-run accident involving the fishing vessel Don-1, a Navy Clearance Diving team has located the wreck of the fishing vessel. Don-1, with seven fishermen aboard, sank early Thursday morning off the Manakodam light house, 20 nautical miles off Kochi harbour entrance. Two fishermen died, three were injured and three others went missing.

A 10 member Navy Clearance Diving team from Southern Naval Command reached the wreck of the Fishing Vessel Don-1 late this evening. The Divers found the wreck lying at the bottom of the sea at 47 meters with the boat's cabin damaged and fuel still leaking. However the hull was relatively intact.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the Directorate General of Shipping has said that on the basis of the information provided by the Coast Guard, there is a possibility that MV Prabhu Daya (Singapore flag) maybe involved in the collision with fishing vessel DON-1. As per the request of D G Shipping, the owners of the vessel have readily co-operated and the vessel has been diverted to Chennai where she is expected to reach by Monday morning.

The Navy Clearance Diving team will continue its effort to locate bodies of fishermen inside the boat tomorrow.

Blood Money not an erotic thriller: Mahesh Bhatt

By Hindustan Times

The leaked intimate scene from Blood Money was not marketing strategy, says Mahesh Bhatt adding that the film does not belong to the erotic thrillers genre like Murder and Jism. "I am not happy. One of our over-enthusiastic PR person thought that leaking it would benefit the film. But these things send a wrong signal about. I was never apologetic about the kinds of films we make. Like Murder and Jism are erotic thrillers. But, Blood Money is not a product of that profile," the 63-year-old said here while promoting the film at a radio station.

"Because of these wrong signals, people think there is a lot of erotica in the film. Someone who doesn't like watching these kind of films will not come and someone who will come expecting erotica will be disappointed. I think it has done us more harm than good," he added.

Directed by Vishal Mahadkar, Blood Money stars Kunal Khemu and Amrita Puri and hits theatres March 30.

Meanwhile, comparisons are being drawn between Blood Money and Bhatt's 1986 film Naam as both films talk about a middle-class boy who treads the wrong path in his pursuit to earn money.

The filmmaker says that they are similar, but only to an extent as both are about sin-money.

"Naam dealt with lower, middle-class Indian dream. Those were the days in 1980s, when everybody thought that if you reach Dubai or Middle-East, you were guaranteed a decent, secure way of life. But this (Blood Money) deals with a slightly upper strata. It talks about a person who has dreams in his eyes and the world of Rolls Royce and plush homes. But it is all built on something which is sin-money," said Bhatt who is also gearing up for Jism 2.

Bhupathi-Bopanna claim Dubai Open title

Dubai: Mahesh Bhuapthi and Rohan Bopanna won their first title together after pipping the Polish pair of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the summit clash if the ATP Dubai Open, here on Saturday.

Bhupathi and Bopanna, seeded fourth, secured a 6-4 3-6 10-5 win after facing stiff resistance from their rivals in the final of the USD 1,700,475 hard court event.

The two Indians, planning to play in Olympics together, had paired as a team at the start of the 2012 season and had reached the semifinals of two tournaments before finally winning a title today.

It is the fourth Dubai title for Bhupathi, having lifted the trophy in 1998 with Leander Paes, in 2004 with Fabrice Santoro and in 2008 with Mark Knowles.

For Bopanna, it is sixth ATP title of his career.

Leander Paes was also competing in the event but he and Janko Tipsarevic had lost 4-6 5-7 to second seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Teacu in the opening round.

Paes has chosen Radek Stepanek as his partner for the 2012 season and won the Australian Open with him.

However, he had started the season with Tipsarevic by winning the Chennai Open in January.

New 'Sridevi' for Ajay's 'Jeetendra'!

By Hindustan Times

Mumbai, Feb. 28 -- Ajay Devgan will soon begin work in Sajid Khan's ext, which according to the director, is "based on" the cult Jeetendra film, Himmatwala (1983). Even as the actor prepares to shoot for the action flick, the makers continue their hunt for a 'new Sridevi' to cast opposite him.

The latest development is that they have decided to rope in an actor from the south for the role. "Our heroine should have the same purity and innocence that Srideviji had in Himmatwala.

She was a superstar down south when she was cast for it. And then she entered Bollywood in a big way. So that has inspired us to cast a south Indian star. I've spoken to Ajay and he's fine with that," reveals Sajid, adding that not too many established Bollywood actors fit the requirements needed for the role, which is why none are in the running.

Sajid, who has worked with Asin in Housefull 2, also credits her professionalism for his decision to pick a south Indian face. "If the call time (for south actors) is seven o'clock in the morning, they will be ready at that time sans any issues."

Himmatwala -set in a small town of Uttar Pradesh goes on the floors this August. "Ajay will have a lot of raw and rugged action scenes in the film. But it won't be like Singham or any of his other movies. He's quite excited about it himself," says Sajid, who has also roped in Rishi Kapoor and Prakash Raj for the other major roles in the film.

"Rishi Kapoor will do a comic role after a while," says Sajid. Bring up the topic of his film being touted as a 'remake' and he clarifies, "The only thing I can say about my film is that it is based on the yesteryear film. Otherwise, it's a completely new story in a contemporary set-up."

Mexico City to retire last iconic VW 'Bug' taxis

Mexico City:  Mexico's capital is ready to stomp out its iconic Volkswagen "Bug" taxis.

Officials said on Friday that the last of the old-style VW Beetles will have their cab licenses expire by the end of the year, marking the end of an adventurous if uncomfortable part of Mexico City life.

The rounded, two-door sedan nicknamed the Bug - in Mexico, it's a "Vocho" - has long been an informal symbol of this sprawling city, a tough, rattling reflection of its gritty urbanity and chaotic streets.

At its height in 2006, the little VWs accounted for almost half of all taxis in Mexico City, with about 50,000 cruising the streets. Today, there are only about 3,500 of the privately owned and operated Bugs among 130,000 taxis.

Victor Ramirez, director of taxi services for the city's transport department, said time has run out for the classic VW design that evolved from the original Beetle of 1930s Germany.

The model hasn't been manufactured since 2003, when the last one rolled off an assembly line in the Mexican state of Puebla.

For safety reasons, Mexico City began mandating four-door taxis in 2003. So the Beetles that entered service in 2002 are the last to operate as cabs. Most car models are limited by the city to eight years of service as taxis, but the Bug was allowed a 10-year run - and that ends with 2012.

Despite their role as icons, the VW taxis have never won plaudits for comfort. Drivers remove the front passenger seat so customers can get in more easily, leaving only the ungenerous back seat.

And with no front seat, there is little to stop the passenger from being thrown forward in a mishap, Ramirez noted.

"If they slammed on the brakes and you weren't wearing a seat belt, you wound up in the windshield," he said. "The government mandated four-door cars, with trunks, to ensure passengers' safety."

For a time, in the 1990s and early 2000s, Bug taxis were notorious as a robbery trap. Because there were only two doors, muggers or kidnappers could push their way through the passenger door, leaving the passenger no way to escape.

Many people felt a pang of nostalgia for the Bug after Friday's announcement, even while acknowledging the little car's shortcomings.

"It's a loss - not exactly for its comfort, but because it was economical" to operate, said Hector Vera Perez, who was a cabbie in the 1970s.

Vera Perez, now a 65-year-old ambulance driver, said the Vocho was much cheaper to run than the big American cars that made up the majority of the city's taxi fleet in those days.

He also argued that the Bugs made the city's streets safer, noting they were slow, fragile and noisy.

"Today the cars (used as taxis) are bigger, and they drive faster," he said. "Before, they drove more cautiously, because any accident would destroy them."

Some people said the VW taxis are easier to find: The engine is so noisy you can hear them rattling down the street blocks away.

Ramirez said that after nearly 10 years of constant use on the capital's punishing streets, the VWs that are losing their taxi licenses are in pretty bad shape. But the city wants to get them off the road, so taxi owners who turn in Bugs to be crushed will get 15,000-peso credits toward the purchase of new cabs, he said.

In some ways, it was the VW's fragility that endeared it to drivers. Vera Perez recalled fondly how easy it was to fix a Vocho after a fender-bender.

"You just took the fender off with a wrench and got another one."

Pakistan moves Interpol for Red Corner Notice against Musharraf

Islamabad:  Pakistani authorities have sent a formal request to Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice for former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, currently living outside the country in self-exile.

The move was taken so that he can be arrested and brought back to the country to face trial in connection with the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) yesterday sent the request to the Director of Interpol in Pakistan, official sources said today.

FIA Special Prosecutor Mohammad Azhar Chaudhry confirmed to the media that the process to bring Mr Musharraf back to Pakistan had begun.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik last week announced that the government would bring Mr Musharraf back to face trial for his alleged failure to provide security to former premier Benazir Bhutto at the time of her assassination in 2007 despite being aware of threats to her life.

Mr Musharraf has been declared a "proclaimed offender" or fugitive by an anti-terrorism court conducting the trial of seven persons accused of involvement in the assassination.
The court also directed authorities to seize Mr Musharraf's assets and to freeze his bank accounts.

Special Prosecutor Chaudhry said an officer of the FIA's joint investigation team probing the assassination had handed over an application for the Red Corner Notice to Interpol's representative in Pakistan.

After scrutinising the application, the Interpol representative will forward it to Interpol headquarters in France, he said.

Once the Red Corner Notice is issued, Mr Musharraf can be detained anywhere in the world and brought back to Pakistan so that he can be produced in court, official sources said.

Mr Musharraf has been living in London and Dubai since he left Pakistan in early 2009 after several criminal and civil cases were filed against him across the country.

Meanwhile, a media report today said the British government may not extradite Mr Musharraf even if Pakistan obtains a Red Corner Notice against him as the two countries do not have an extradition treaty.

The News daily, quoting a senior unnamed British diplomatic source said that not only Mr Musharraf but a number of people from various countries living in Britain are wanted by their governments on different counts.

As long as they obey the law in Britain, they are not deported, the source claimed.

Mr Musharraf has not sought asylum in Britain but is staying as a guest who respects "British laws faithfully", the daily quoted its sources as saying.

"We have no problem with his staying in the United Kingdom," a source said.

Mr Musharraf recently put off his plans to return to Pakistan in March after the government warned that he would be arrested on arrival.

The former dictator had planned to return to the country to lead his All Pakistan Muslim League party in the next general election.

He has denied allegations that he was in any way involved in Bhutto's assassination and said he is willing to face Pakistani courts.

Shehla Masood murder: Farooqui sent to three-day CBI custody

Indore:  A special CBI court today sent Saba Farooqui, a close friend of architect Zahida Parvez who is the alleged mastermind of RTI activist Shehla Masood's murder, to the agency's custody till March 6.

She was produced before special CBI judge Subhra Singh, who sent her to three-day custody of the Central agency, which is probing the case.

Farooqui was arrested yesterday in Bhopal and brought to Indore this afternoon by a CBI-Special Crime Branch team.

The CBI spokesperson had said in New Delhi that she is understood to be aware of the crime and believed to have assisted in the conspiracy.

Farooqui was an employee of Parvez for last five to six months and had developed close friendship with her, CBI sources said. They said she knew Parvez's relations with a BJP MLA and was also aware about her growing resentment towards Masood, also believed to be close to the politician.

From the personal diary of 36-year-old Parvez, recovered by the agency on Thursday during its searches at her residence, the CBI has found some entries which show close proximity of Farooqui with the architect, they said.

One such entry shows that both had celebrated on the evening Masood was murdered, the sources said.

Masood was shot dead outside her house at Koh-e-Fiza locality on August 16 last year when she was going to take part in protests in support of Jan Lokpal Bill.

An RTI activist, Masood had worked in several areas including environment protection, conservation of wildlife and anti-corruption movement.

Coast guard hunts for ship that hit Kerala fishermen

Thiruvananthapuram:  The Coast Guard and Navy have launched a massive hunt for a ship that hit a fishing boat and ran away off the Alleppey coast in Kerala. There were seven fishermen on the boat. Two have died, two have been rescued and three are missing.
The Coast Guard is also looking for the missing fishermen. The incident happened after midnight on Sunday. Fifteen boats with fishermen were out at sea and had laid their nets out, when one of the boats was hit by the ship.
Survivors say they suspect the ship was an oil tanker. Fisherman Michael recounts from his Alleppey hospital bed that as soon as the ship hit the boat, lights were switched off on it and the big vessel fled in the darkness. Michael and another fisherman were rescued by their mates on other boats and taken to hospital.
"There was enough space for them to turn the ship away, but they didn't turn away. They collided with us on purpose. On impact, our boat turned over. As a result we all went over and were trapped under the boat. Another fisherman and I were in the water. We were helpless. Due to the grace of God are we safe now," Michael says.
There are contradictory reports on where the hit-and-run happened. The fishermen say their boat, the Dwan-II, had ventured to sea  from the Neendakara fishing harbour, but  was well within Indian waters. But the Coast Guard is also looking into whether the incident happened in international waters.  Along with the Navy and Marine Enforcement, they have also launched a search to spot and identify the ship and find out how exactly the mishap occurred, Alappuzha District Collector Saurav Jain said.
The fishermen who have died were identified by the police as Francis Justine and Xavier.
