Hockey superstar Sandeep Singh now in Punjabi film

New Delhi: After an impressive outing in the Hockey Olympic qualifier, ace drag-flicker Sandeep Singh is all set to showcase his acting skills on the silver screen.

Sandeep, apparently has done a guest appearance in a Punjabi movie, 'Aaj de Ranjhe', directed by Bollywood cinematographer Manmohan Singh.

Sandeep, who scored staggering 16 goals in the recently-concluded Olympic qualifiers, including five goals in the final match, which helped India book a berth in the upcoming London Games, said he enjoyed working in a movie.

"The main lead in the film, Gurpreet Guggi, is my friend and I could not turn down his request," said Sandeep.

"I really enjoyed the experience (of working in films). I have a small role where I am playing Sandeep Singh only," he added.

Asked if he has any Bollywood aspirations also, Sandeep said, "Hockey is my first love and I devote most of my time to hockey only. But if I get time I won't mind working in films too."

Former hockey captain Dilip Tirkey had earlier featured in an Oriya film.

Britain may have to admit 12,000 Indian workers: Report

London:  Brussels has drawn up a plan that could force Britain to admit 12,000 workers from India despite soaring unemployment at home, the Daily Mail reported.
The order is part of an EU-wide plan to boost trade with India.

EU officials say that, in return for opening up the jobs market, countries such as Britain will be helped to land lucrative export deals.
But, of 40,000 workers who will be allowed to live and work in Europe, Britain has been told it must take 12,000, according to leaked EU documents. (Read: 40,000 Indians to be allowed to work in Europe, says report)
This is far more than any other EU nation - and three times the number which will be permitted France, the newspaper said on Friday.
Even Germany, which has one of the world's largest economies, will admit only 8,000 workers.
The Indian migrants, who can live and work in Britain for six months, will be in addition to people given visas under Britain's supposedly strict immigration cap.

It comes at a time when British unemployment is close to a 17-year high, at 2.67 million.
A large number of the beneficiaries will be IT workers, who already arrive in large numbers from India.

The details emerged in a leaked copy of the EU/India Free Trade Agreement, which is due to be signed later this year.

The aim is to encourage greater export trade between the EU and India.

Batman crowned ‘greatest comic hero’

By Hindustan Times

Batman has been named the greatest comic hero of all time in a poll conducted by a magazine.

The readers of Comic Heroes magazine voted for the caped crusader, the alias of billionaire Bruce Wayne, as their top comic hero, ahead of Spider-Man and Superman, who came second and third respectively.

The magazine is not the first to rank heroes from the world of comics. In 2008, Empire magazine put Superman on top, followed by Batman and John Constantine, the exorcist created by Alan Moore, while the Man of Steel also topped a list from IGN.

But Comic Heroes editor Jes Bickham said it was “no surprise” that Batman came in at No 1 as the character, created in 1939 by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, was, “quite simply, the coolest and most interesting superhero ever created”.

“Batman doesn’t have superpowers; he gets by with his mind, his wit and his physical abilities,” the Guardian quoted Bickham as saying.

“He’s dark, conflicted and tragic, yet never less than the best of us. He’s got the best costume and the finest gadgets.

“His rogues’ gallery is the most frightening and freakish collection of villains ever assembled; a cavalcade of criminality unmatched in modern comics.

“He’s also strong enough to fit almost any story, being constantly remoulded by writers and artists since his creation in 1939,” the editor added.

Wolverine, the adamantium-clawed mutant from X-Men, comes in fourth in Comic Heroes’ top 10, followed by Judge Dredd. Tintin makes a surprise appearance in sixth place, with the list rounded out by Captain America, a token woman in the shape of Wonder Woman, The Spirit and The Thing.

Comic Heroes’ top 10 comic heroes of all time are:

1. Batman

2. Spider-Man

3. Superman

4. Wolverine

5. Judge Dredd

6. Tintin

7. Captain America

8. Wonder Woman

9. The Spirit

10. The Thing

Kathryn Bigelow in India for Osama film

By Hindustan Times

The city of Chandigarh is getting its share of Hollywood flavour these days. The Hurt Locker-fame Hollywood director Kathryn Bigelow is in the Punjab capital to shoot some scenes for her much-anticipated film based on Al-Qaeda chief, Osama Bin Laden’s killing.

For the shoot, some markets in the city have been made to look like a bazaar in Rawalpindi or Islamabad in Pakistan. The film will relive the operation led by American Navy SEALs to kill Bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan in 2011. While the production team plans to reportedly recreate Abbottabad in Rajasthan, Chandigarh will feature extensively in the film, which is said to be titled, Zero Dark 30.

The unit will shoot scenes at various locations in Chandigarh for about a month, and the locals are excited about the Hollywood crew stationed in the city. Some of the stores in Sector 15, one of the popular shopping areas in the city, were given urdu nameplates for the shoot. Some local artists too, got a chance to be a part of the shoot as a local production company gathered about 140 junior artists for “the crowd” scene.

“The make-up artist took over an hour to give me a Pakistani makeover,” said Girdhari Lal, who got a chance to be a part of the scene. “It is a challenging job to create Pakistan in India but we are doing our best,” said a member of the unit, wishing not to be named.

The production companies from Mumbai and Delhi have also been roped in. The crew of the film, including Kathryn, did not speak to the media, but there were reports that Hollywood actors, including Jessica Chastain, are expected to be in town for the film, which will also be shot in Patiala.

No ‘pitt’ stop
The ongoing shoot for Bigelow’s movie took an amusing turn when a rumour spread that Hollywood actor Brad Pitt is shooting for the movie in Chandigarh. A unit member later confirmed that Pitt does not star in the film, and was not in the city.

Asin loses 10 kilos for Housefull 2 shoot

By Hindustan Times

n Bollywood, weighty issues are never in short supply. Now, Asin seems to have joined the bandwagon. The actor lost around 10 kilos after wrapping up the first schedule of Housefull 2 in London around June last year, just in time for the second leg, which kicked off in Mumbai in September.

“We were surprised to see Asin in a lighter avatar. But instead of panicking, everyone — including Sajid (director Sajid Khan) —loved her new look as it was only going to work as a value addition,” says an insider in the unit.

Although makers approved of Asin’s slender figure, they had to make certain adjustments. To start with, the camera was placed a little further from the actor than usual. Plus, some clothes meant for certain photo shoots had to be adjusted.

“Indian dresses such as the ghagra-choli were altered to fit Asin. But they had to replace the dresses with the same designs in smaller sizes from costume designer Aki Narula because the old ones were too big for her and couldn’t be altered,” says the insider, adding that the development cost the production house R2.5 lakh extra.

When contacted, director Sajid Khan says, “I really don’t know if Asin lost weight or not. All I will say is that she was looking terrific during our second schedule. And I don’t think any director can complain if his actor is coming across as being even more beautiful and has shed flab.’” Asin’s team, on their part, denies the weight loss.

R3.5 lakh hung off movie hoarding!

By Hindustan Times

Mumbai, Feb. 29 -- If you were walking around Juhu yesterday, you might have realised that money doesn't grow on trees it hangs off billboards. To promote their upcoming release Paan Singh Tomar, production house UTV Motion Pictures risked losing R3.5 lakh in cash, which they strung up on a prominent hoarding opposite a Juhu coffee shop.

Confirming the news, Shikha Kapur, senior vicepresident of UTV Motion Pictures, says, "As Irrfan plays a robber in the film, we e film, we hought it would be a nice innoation in the outdoor advertising space. We are pegging it (the cash bounty) as Paan Singh's loot. "

The production house claims to have made the required arrangements to protect their stash, which was hoisted onto the poster opposite popular haunt Costa Coffee around noon. Shikha says, "In terms of security, there were people posted around the hoarding, though they were dressed in casual clothing."

The experiment only lasted for a brief spell, since the filmmakers didn't want the pile of cash to attract any unwanted trouble. "We only put it up for a couple of hours, and took it down by 3 pm. We are aware that we can't keep the money up there until the film releases," admits Shikha.

DN Nagar resident Rafiq Ahmed, who witnessed some adventurous opportunists scaling the billboard, says, "We saw a bag full of money hanging from the hoarding. We thought that it was fake, but when some people tried climbing the poles of the hoarding to get the money, we realised that it was real." Passer-by Sahil Patel stopped his car to get a better glimpse of the hoarding. "There was lots of excitement on the ground as people were looking up at the cash hanging there. I wish I knew how to climb," he says. In the Tighmanshu Dhuliadirected film, Irrfan Khan takes on the role of the real-life dacoit.

Krrish comes to Mumbai?

By Hindustan Times

Mumbai, Feb. 28 -- Good morning potato chips! Usually, Usually, people suffer Monday morning blues; I'm a little different. I go through the Tuesday morning blues! Anyway, that doesn't mean I won't do what I'm best at, sharing Bollywood gossip with you. And even before I can think of digressing, Sher Lock Holmes insists I must share this with you, right away.

Hrithik Roshan, whose Agneepath has created new box office records not just in India but also overseas, has been shooting a slew of action scenes in Hyderabad for Krrish 3 with papa Rakesh Roshan's aashirwaad.

Over the last one month, he has filmed fewer soft and romantic scenes and more maar-dhaad sequences for the sequel of his superhero film.

According to my jasoos from Juhu, he has just about 20 days of work left in Hyderabad, after which he will have a long shooting spell in Mumbai, amidst the raging summer heat. But he's quite kicked about the second schedule because he'll get to be with his biwi Sussanne and bachchas Hrehaan and Hridaan. So, garmi chalegi.

After about a month or so in the city, he will push off with a certain part of the cast and crew to an exotic locale to shoot one or two songs and scenes for his film and wrap it up by the end of July, so that papa and he can start on the post production of the film which will take up more time than it took for the entire film's shooting. Kya baat! Kya baat! Kya baat!

No Warne for Royals!

By Hindustan Times

Mumbai, Feb. 29 -- He coached and captained Rajasthan Royals successfully in the first edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. But last year, champion leg spinner Shane Warne announced his retirement from professional cricket. Soon after, the Royals stated that they are "looking forward to him assuming a larger role in the team".

But even as the fifth edition of IPL gets set to kick-off in April, team co-owner Raj Kundra says Shane "has had his innings (with Rajasthan Royals)". "He is doing his own thing and is busy with his girlfriend (Liz Hurley)," says Kundra, adding, "Shane was with us for four years, and he has been great. But we need to move on and give Rahul Dravid (new captain) a chance. He is a great idol, and that's why all the kids look up to him." But isn't Rahul seen as a player who doesn't fit the IPL mould?

"Hence we kept him for a year with Shane. We believe he has the potential to captain the team," says Kundra, adding, "Still we had to persuade Rahul to become the captain. but we feel he will deliver. The main reason being he got a chance to experience how Shane worked in an out-of-the-box manner. Plus, he comes with his own mindset. He is a focused cricketer, very disciplined and his training is better than anyone I know in the cricketing world."

At the same time, Kundra accepts that the absence of Pakistani players has hit his team. "It definitely hit us but it's 20-20 cricket and that's entertainment and not pure cricket. So, the team that comes first one year can end up at the last position in the next and vice versa. This year, we have picked up a couple of good Sri Lankan players, and Brad Hodge and S Sreesanth. So, we've got a nice mix," he says.

Madonna in bare essentials on new cover!

By Hindustan Times

Pop queen Madonna looks her seductive best on the cover of her new single, as she poses in a black, barely-there brassiere. The lady like the name of her latest single from her forthcoming studio album MDNA, has gone wild on the cover flaunting her toned stomach. "The barely-there outfit is to be expected of a woman who repeatedly sings about sex in songs like Like A Virgin, Justify My Love and Erotica. The black, triangle-shaped lace bra doesn't hide much, and very nearly leaves the superstar exposed," reports Daily Mail.

"She doesn't cover up in other articles of clothing, either, flaunting most of trim and toned stomach. Her mouth is open in a suggestive pose, and her blonde locks are artfully tousled. Everything about the cover is suggestive, including the title," says the tabloid.

Girls Gone Wild is a video series created by Joe Francis where college-age girls perform various sexual acts on camera.

"Girl Gone Wild is all about the heat of letting loose and dancing, certainly themes that Madge fans will find familiar. Produced by Benny Benassi, the track, though fun and funky, is a bit darker than her first single, which seemed to pay homage to the '80s version of the pop icon in its bright nature," reports MTV.

Tibetans hold protests in Delhi against India-China border talks

Delhi:  About a dozen Tibetans, including women, today staged a protest outside the Hyderabad House objecting to the border talks between India and China claiming that Beijing cannot discuss the issue before giving freedom to Tibet.

Draped in Tibetan flags and carrying anti-China placards, the protesters assembled in front of the Hyderabad House near India Gate in the morning where External Affairs Minister S M Krishna was holding bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi.

Anticipating protests, a number of police personnel were deployed in the area and they immediately detained the demonstrators who were shouting slogans demanding freedom for Tibet.

"We have detained the protesters, including women. We have taken them to a nearby police station," a senior police official said.

One of the protesters said China cannot discuss the issue before giving freedom to Tibet. "It is ridiculous for China to have talks with India before giving us freedom," he said.
