Shashi Kapoor, an actor and a gentleman

When I was a schoolgirl he was my poster boy. The toothy smile, angreezi ada and his commercial capers made him an actor and a gentleman who was simply irresistible.

I waited for Doordarshan to screen one of his movies but hated to see Shashi Kapoor chasing another woman, even if it was all make-believe. Only Sharmila Tagore and Raakhee’s Sharmilee didn’t make the hate list. And that was because few believe my name is really Roshmila since it’s unusual even for a Bengali. They simply correct it to Sharmila or Sharmilee. These names were so much a part of my persona that I could happily believe I was Sharmila or Sharmilee who made Shashi swoon.

I wasn’t the only one with a secret crush on him. Recently, Shabana Azmi admitted that he would drop by with his father, Prithviraj Kapoor, every Sunday to meet her parents, Kaifi Azmi and Shaukat. And every week, schoolgirl Shabana would save her pocket money to buy a new black-and-white movie still of his that she’d shyly ask him to autograph.

My dream of romancing my matinee idol on screen remained a dream. Shabana was more fortunate. But Fakira made her smile and cry too. It happened one morning when she arrived on the sets and the assistant choreographer told her they were shooting a night-after song. He then went on to demonstrate some intimate dance moves that left her appalled and sent her scurrying into her make-up room.

“I can’t do it!’ she told Shashi in tears. He responded with a gruff, “Silly girl, don’t be daft! Guess you didn’t know what you were getting into when you’d tell Shaukatji, ‘Mummy, mummy main bhi actor banoongi. (I also want to be an actor)’”

He walked out of her make-up room but when she arrived on the sets, she found that he’d changed all the steps. Typical Shashi Kapoor!

I never got a chance to interview him but I recall a senior colleague setting up an appointment with him and arriving five minutes late. She was turned away at the door. Shashi was a stickler for punctuality and even at the peak of his career, when he was juggling four films, he never kept anyone waiting on the sets.

I loved Sharmilee, Fakira, Aa Gale Lag Jaa, Chor Machaye Shor, Trishul… And 36 Chowringhee Lane, Junoon, Kalyug and Vijeta too. I found it interesting that Shashi was one of the first Bollywood stars to go international with Shakespeare-Wallah, Pretty Polly and Siddharth, and made his money from commercial cinema and then put all of it back into art-cinema and Prithvi theatre that earned him nothing.

“He was one of the most generous people I know. When we’d go for festivals abroad with eight dollars a day, Shashiji was the one unobtrusively picking up everyone’s tabs,” reminisces Shabana, adding that during Junoon, the star-producer refused to follow the hierarchy of the time and gave both cast and crew equal treatment.

However, the incident that’s etched in stone in her memory involves a hunger strike in ’86. Crusading for alternate accommodation for slum-dwellers whose homes had been demolished, Shabana, with activist-filmmaker Anand Patwardan and three slumdwellers, went on an indefinite hunger strike in Colaba. It was hot and after five days without food, her blood pressure dipped alarmingly.

Shashi heard about the fast and dropped by. Anand explained the issue to him and without a word to anyone, he paid the Chief Minister a visit during which he pointed out that a member of his fraternity was ill and if he didn’t help out now, he should not expect the industry to come together for any government campaigns either.

Immediately, the Housing Minister was sent across and all the demands met. Everyone was jubilant and when the media asked Shabana how the miracle had happened, she pointed to Shashi. “He refused to accept any credit, and when I went on stage and officially broke my fast, I saw a quiet figure disappearing around the corner,” she says, with a catch in her voice.

Today is Shashi Kapoor’s birthday and Shabana who has been invited to a few celebrations, remembers them as quiet family affairs at home. “He was a big star, has won the National Award and the Padma Bhushan, done loads of charity work and contributed majorly to our film industry, yet he’s always played down his achievements,” she says. “My mother who knew his father well says he’s a worthy son. For me he will always be a gentleman-actor.”

Me too! And even though I’m all grown up now, he’s still my Prince Charming!

Ram Kapoor 'kiss-and-tell' trends on Twitter!

Viewers of popular television soap Bade Acche Lagte Hain were in for a big surprise as the lead actors Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanvar indulged in a liplock which was part of good 17 minutes long love-making scene. The episode aired last night at 10.30 pm on Sony.

The channel was promoting the steamy episode for a while but an actual lip to lip wasn't really expected. People watching the episode with families were a bit scandalised.

Sakshi did a decent job but it was Ram who took the cake. His expressions of hesitation, desire and love came out quite naturally.

Bade Acche Lagte Hain, with television rating of 3.25% (as reported by Screen), is a story of two strangers from different backgrounds getting married and eventually falling in love. Kapoor plays business honcho Ram in his 40s while Tanwar portrays Priya, a teacher in her 30s. In the last episode, Ram confesses his love to Priya and consummates his marriage. And how!

The bedroom scene was enacted with, In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein from Jodhaa Akbar playing in the backdrop. In the film too, Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan consummated their marriage in this song sequence. It's so obviously contrived.

However, the promo scene, which had Bahon Ke Darmiyan as the background score, wasn't aired. May be there's still more to come. So next time, be a little wary if your kids or parents are by your side when you are glued to another episode of BALH.

Ekta Kapoor: 'No reality shows for me!'

NEW DELHI, March 13 -- After 18 years in the industry, and producing over 50 TV shows, producer Ekta Kapoor says that she doesn't want to re-enter the realm of reality shows, despite rumours that she is planning one with a leading channel.

Ekta's earlier ventures into reality TV, Kabhi Kabhii Pyaar Kabhi Kabhii Yaar (Sony Entertainment) and Kaun Jeetega Bollywood Ka Ticket (9X), attracted more criticism than accolades. "We put too much drama into these shows, and even today, regardless of what anyone says, I'm proud of them!"

Ekta says. "We took baby steps into the reality show scene with these two shows. Today, I know that I can do better, but I am content narrating stories about the common man in my movies and TV shows. The audience connects with them better, and that is what matters," adds the 36-year-old.

Ask her about recent rumours doing the rounds, about her launching a third reality show, and she says, "Producing a reality show takes a certain kind of expertise and I don't think I have it right now. In the midst of my ongoing projects, I don't have time to run through new formats, and think about how to execute them."

Ekta is currently on a high after actor Vidya Balan won a National Award for her Award for her performance in the the film The Dirty Picture, that Ekta produced. "It proves that the human side of any story, combined with an actor's honest effort, can make or break a project," she says.

Sonam Kapoor is a big foodie!

Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor, who is known for her wonderful styling, however can't resist herself when it comes to food. She claims her life revolves around food.
"My whole life revolves around food. While having breakfast I think what I should have for lunch. while having lunch I think what I should eat for dinner," Sonam told IANS during the unveiling of Wassup! Andheri, a three-day art and entertainment festival in the Andheri suburb.
This glamorous actor, who belongs to a Punjabi family, loves feeding people. She said: "I am a Punjabi and the whole point is I love feeding people and I love getting fed."
Sonam had to lose oodles of weight before she starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya.
She is, however, giving a tough time to her dietitian.
"My dietitian has been working on me for quite some time and she has been unsuccessful," the 26-year-old said.

Rhea Kapoor trademarks her Herogiri

In 2010, she successfully adapted Jane Austen’s novel, Emma, to make Aisha starring Sonam Kapoor. Now Anil Kapoor’s younger daughter, Rhea, has turned to books again for her second production venture. She has bought the rights of the novel Herogiri, written by Mainak Dhar.
“After Aisha – a film we are very proud of – I wanted the concept of my next film to be really exciting. Herogiri is a story I’m extremely passionate about because it’s interesting and very different,” says the 25-year-old producer, who has, for the first time, also worked on the screenplay of the film.
“The title caught my attention. Besides, the ideas in it are very relevant to today’s times. Although it’s a thriller, the film is fresh and young,” says Rhea, adding that Karan Boolani, who has been associated with films like Wake Up Sid and Aisha in the past, will direct the film.
What’s most interesting is that Rhea – for the first time in Bollywood – has officially trademarked the title Herogiri. All rights to the word now lie with Rhea and no one else can use it without her consent. “You will soon get to know why we have trademarked it. It will help a lot with marketing and publicity,” she says.
Rhea confirms that the film is likely to go on floors by the end of this year. Will she cast her sister once again? “We will start talking to actors soon and all decisions, including the one to cast Sonam, will be taken collectively,” she says.

Bade Acchhe Lagte HainThe 36-year-old producer is currently on a high after actor Vidya Balan won a National Award for her performance in The Dirty Picture. “It proves that the human side of any story, combined with an actor’s honest effort, can make or break a project,” says Ekta, who has four Hindi daily soaps on air just now, each revolving around the ‘aam aadmi’ (common man), which is a shift from her large-canvas shows in the past.

Parichay airs on Colors, Bade Acche Lagte Hain and Kya Hua Terra Vaada on Sony and Pavitra Rishta on Zee TV. “Once in a while, we all borrow ideas from popular movies or real life incidents, and play them up in a way to bring in the audience,” she says.

Sameer Soni’s character, Kunal, in Parichay, recently won a court case against Richa (Mona Vasu) after she accused him of rape, unmasking her as the real culprit. The twist reminds you of the Akshay Kumar-Priyanka Chopra starrer Aitraaz.

“The track was my creative team’s idea in the context of the rampant gender bias in society today. If a woman accuses a man of rape, she is easily believed but if the tables are turned, the plea falls on deaf ears. This twist was one of the best ways of highlighting the imbalance that has been sparking off newspaper headlines lately,” she reasons . “This twist also takes Kunal and Siddhi’s love story forward, making their characters more believable.”

He has largely been known as the chocolate boy in Bollywood. But Shahid Kapoor is set to undergo a transformation for UTV’s Hindi remake of the Tamil action venture, Vettai. Released this January, The Arya-R Madhavan starrer was produced by the same banner. Shahid is likely to play the part
originally portrayed by Arya.

When contacted, Siddharth Roy Kapoor, UTV Motion Pictures’ CEO confirms: “Yes, we are in advanced discussions with Shahid, but till we make a formal announcement, I wouldn’t like to say much about the cast.” N Lingusamy will apparently direct the Hindi remake too, while Madhavan may also reprise his role.

Vettai revolves around two brothers — the younger one played by Arya, and the older, by Madhavan. While the latter is sensitive to violence, Arya is a jobless rogue. After being beaten up by goons, Madhavan becomes stronger, thanks to the training he receives from his younger brother. The two then get back at two goons and protect their family.

“Vettai is essentially an action film, but like other south Indian films, it also has a dose of masala entertainment including humour, stunts, dance, songs and romance. But in terms of genre, it’s an action – rough and rugged kind – film,” says Kapoor, adding that the production house has had a “fantastic start” to 2012. “The last few months have been very good for us.

Starting with Vettai, our big release on Pongal, we have had a great run with Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya, and now, Paan Singh Tomar,” he says, adding, “Everything boils down to making the right creative choices. Thankfully, we’ve managed to do it.”
