Saif, Kareena to clash over item songs!

They may be a couple in real life, but on screen Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor are about to clash over item numbers in the film Agent Vinod. Who does it better?

Many are asking if Kareena's mujra song, Dil Mera Muft Ka, will be overshadowed by Saif's Pyaar Ki Pungi. The latter is described as a number that catches your attention in the first 20 seconds because of its comic, cheeky notes and free footsteps.

When asked about the song, Saif told IANS: "There is a sequence in the film where Agent Vinod is being watched by CCTV cameras...and he is behaving in a certain way, so we thought we should do an extension to that and we did the song."

Composed by Pritam Chakraborty, Pyaar Ki Pungi has been written by lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya and choreographed by Jasmin Oza. Mika has sung it.

Since Agent Vinod, a sleek spy thriller, is full of actions and thrills, director Sriram Raghavan didn't give much attention to the songs as it can shift people's interest and the essence of the movie.

So Pyaar Ki Pungi has been especially created and used as a promotional number. The song plays in the background during one of the scenes in Agent Vinod with a punchline saying, "Catch the other side of (Majnu) Vinod."

If you are wondering who taught such funny steps to Saif, it's none other than Jasmin Oza, who worked with Saif on an ad for Amul innerwear. She wanted to make the dance moves the actor's signature steps.

"It's a song full of naughty steps, I call it Indian contemporary tapori steps. This song is full of groovy steps, full dhamaal song with a high energy. These are the fresh and unique steps which are never done by Saif. Overall steps and the choreography were taught to Saif, but at the same time he added his own steps," Ojha told IANS.

"My job was to make him comfortable and to get him into that different kind of funny dancing style. When any actor does such steps, people start thinking about stars like Govinda. To make it exclusive and Saif's own style, we put his steps while making the song," he added.

Pungi is a word derived from the snakecharmer's instrument - known as 'been' in Hindi and 'pungi' in Marathi.

Usually item numbers are associated with actresses and their 'jhatkas' and 'matkas'. In fact there is a mujra number picturised on Kareena Kapoor and it was the first one to hit the screens. But "Pungi" has become more popular.

Lyricist Bhattacharya says the definition of item numbers is changing and added: "It's difficult to explain the phrase. Usually any song that stands out in a movie or a song where a female protagonist performs in a different manner is called an item number. I feel a song that attracts viewers' attention towards a movie and rises on the popularity chart is called an item number."

Bhattacharya is the man behind the unconventional lyrics of Emotional Atyachar in Dev D.

"Emotional Atyachar was a big hit and was an item number for the movie. It had such power that they ran a campaign over this song which really helped in the opening of the film.

"So, the song that catches the whole focus of the movie is an item number. There is not any compulsory rule that an item number should be performed only by a female protagonist."

The "pungi" word has caught on with youth.

The song's popularity has been bogged down by rumours of plagiarism, but Pritam said: "Melodically and lyrically it's no way similar to the song (Soosan Khanoom by Iranian pop band Barobax) in question, and I'm not even bringing up the element of creative coincidence which is largely prevalent in the day and age we exist in."

Why Kareena will not do a "Dirty Picture"

Kareena Kapoor feels Vidya Balan is the hero of 2011 and her performance in The Dirty Picture "has changed the game". The actor, however admits she would most likely not have taken up the film.

"I don't know if I would have taken the risk but even if I did I would have balanced it out by making sure there is a Salman or Shah Rukh in the film so that even if the film flops there is some thing that will balance it."

When posed with the question, Kareena paused a bit and said "I don't know, may be I should ask Saif this. He hasn't even watched it. Everytime I ask him to watch it he says yeah yeah, perhaps he's afraid that I'd want to do something similar."

While awed by Kahaani performance the astute observer pointed out, quite correctly that The Dirty Picture had its share of masala moments which pulled the crowd to the theaters - in terms of costumes, make-up and the "fake orgasm".

Asked if she's the fourth Khan today, Kareena, without batting an eyelid said: "Vidya is the true hero of 2011."

Kareena says though good scripts work, it is still the star power that rules the industry.

"There are a lot of director who come to me with brilliant scripts but don't have the money to finance it. But our industry sadly doesn't run only on good scripts, Bodyguard wasn't one of the best scripts but it earned so much because of Salman in it," Kareena said.

On marriage
Actor Kareena Kapoor, who is busy shooting for Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine, says she will get married to beau Saif Ali Khan by the end of the year.

Reports suggested that the Bollywood couple was planning to tie the knot after the release of Saif's home production Agent Vinod this March but Kareena says they are in no rush.

"I will get married hopefully by the end of this year... because I am busy doing Heroine and I have to finish the film first. We are not yet going to announce the date. We are in no such rush but it will happen this year," said Kareena, who was in the Capital to attend the India Today Conclave.

The 31-year-old, who has been dating Saif since 2007, says she does not consider herself as a "star" but just "a simple girl in love".

"I am actually just a simple girl in love whose dreams have come true. Ever since I was 9, I would see Karisma (sister) rehearse and I would go backstage and repeat the same things. I always wanted to act and I know nothing other than acting. I have no degree and so I hope to act forever," she said.

On her Heroine role
Kareena has done a variety of role in her career spanning over a decade. She has given hits like Jab We Met, 3 Idiots, Omkara, Bodyguard and RA.One.

Talking about her film Heroine, Kareena said, "It's turning out pretty well... It's an exciting journey of an actress, she is slightly schizophrenic and she has got these different mood swings it's very difficult for me to do...But I am glad there is a role like this. It is fun not to stand behind Shah Rukh and Salman in a movie but prove yourself as an actor."

On male-dominated Bollywood
The actor, who comes from a filmy background, says things have changed a lot in Bollywood except the fact that male actors are still paid more than their female counterparts.

"How much ever things change in Bollywood, male actors have always been paid more than females... when it comes to numbers I am no where close to any of the Khans. So for me it's not about replacing the men in our industry but doing the best I can.

"There are a lot of women-centric roles that I am being offered and not just being an eye candy in the film. I think Vidya Balan's The Dirty Picture has changed the entire game," Kareena said.

Actor-producer Saif Ali Khan has admitted that his second home production, Agent Vinod, which opens on March 23, is along the lines of some of the biggest Hollywood franchises, namely the Bourne series, The Adventures Of Tintin and James Bond.

The film’s first promo had a flash of bikini beauties sparking off speculations that actor Kareena Kapoor, who cut down to a size zero to flaunt a swimsuit in her first film with Saif, Tashan (2008), would once again sport a two-piece in her beau’s home production. But Agent Vinod’s leading lady denies this, categorically.

“Every second girl today is wearing a bikini, so there is no need for my character Simran to wear one too,” says Kareena. “She is not your usual Bond girl. Sure, she’s glamorous, but she looks hot and mysterious even when fully clothed in a pair of jeans and a shirt or a full-length gown.”

The actor is encouraged by the reactions to the film’s promos, in particular her first ‘mujra’.

Prod her on the long wait, with release dates shifting from December to March, and Kareena argues that a big- budget action-packed adventure that has been shot in 12 countries, including Morocco and Latvia, with a perfectionist star-producer, takes time to wrap up.

“The delayed release works for us because we’ve had a breather since RA.One, Mission Impossible IV and Don 2 that released last year and the audience is now ready for the adrenaline rush of another thriller,” she reasons. “And I’m confident I’ll make the best pair with Saif this year.”
