Akhilesh Yadav's partyman, who fired at Govt officer in Jhansi, arrested

Lucknow:  Despite several warnings, Samajwadi Party workers continue to defy orders of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav by indulging in acts of hooliganism and violent behaviour. A Block Development Officer (BDO) in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi district, SK Shrivastava, was shot at by a local Samajwadi Party worker on Sunday evening. Mr Shrivastava sustained injuries in his leg and is being treated at the district hospital. His condition is said to be stable.

The police today arrested the Samajwadi Party leader, Bharat Singh Yadav.

Mr Shrivastava says the attack on him was premeditated as Mr Yadav wanted revenge. Mr Shrivastava had got a case registered against Mr Yadav for trying to rig the election of the party's candidate to the legislative council in 2010. Mr Yadav's wife, Kalyani Devi, is the local block head and also belongs to the Samajwadi Party.

For years, Samajwadi Party has been accused as a party which sheltered and promoted hooligans. Akhilesh Yadav had promised voters during his campaign that he would cleanse his party of the "goondas" or hooligans. He had also said that his top priority would be to deliver law and order to a state besieged by crime, but with numerous acts of violence by Samajwadi Party workers being reported, how well Akhilesh will deliver on this front remains to be seen.

26/11 terror attack case: Pak panel records statement of Investigating Officer

Mumbai:  The 8-member Judicial Commission from Pakistan, here to record statements of four key witnesses in the November 26 Mumbai terror attacks case, today took down the versions of the Investigating Officer and two doctors (who had conducted post-mortem of victims).

The proceedings were held in-camera before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate S S Shinde for the second day today. Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who headed the prosecution in 26/11 trial, was also present.

The Commission recorded the statement of Senior Inspector Ramesh Mahale, who had investigated the terror attacks case. Sources said that Mahale told the Commission how the lone surviving Pakistani terrorist, Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, was overpowered by police at Girgaum Chowpatty during the attacks. Mahale also spoke of incidents in which Kasab had shot at people and policemen, killing some and injuring many others.

Mahale also told the Commission that Kasab had disclosed his role in the terror attacks voluntarily, and given a confession before a Magistrate here.

Kasab was awarded death sentence by a Mumbai court and his appeal is pending before the Supreme Court.

Later, the Commission recorded the statements of the two doctors who conducted autopsies of 26/11 victims and the nine slain terrorists, before winding up the proceedings.

The Commission had yesterday recorded the statement of Magistrate R V Sawant-Waghule who had taken on record Kasab's confession soon after his arrest. Waghule told the panel that Kasab had confessed to his role in attacks and had said that he and nine others had been sent by Lashkar-e-Taiba to unleash terror in Mumbai.

12-year-old shot dead by drunk Delhi police officer

New Delhi:  A 12-year-old boy was shot dead by a drunk Delhi police constable, who opened fire during a marriage ceremony in the capital, police said on Monday.

The incident took place around 11.15 pm on Sunday at Dhaka village in north Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar.

Tarun Chauhan, a class 7th student studying in a government school, received a bullet in his chest when the accused opened celebratory fire at the marriage ceremony.

"He was rushed to Sushruta Trauma Centre in the Civil Lines area where doctors declared him brought dead," said a senior police officer.

The accused, identified as Jai Baba, 35, is deputed as a constable in the Delhi Police crime branch. He has been arrested and a case registered against him.

Manmeet, a cousin of the bride, had invited Baba and Sanjay, a constable deputed in west Delhi's Subhash Place police station, to the ceremony.

The accused had consumed alcohol during the ceremony along with Sanjay and three-four other friends.

"After consuming alcohol, they were on the dance floor where Baba took out his service revolver and fired two shots in the air. He then fired a straight shot. The bullet pierced the victim's chest who was also dancing on the stage," said the official.

The enraged relatives of the victim beat up the accused and handed him over to police, said the official.
