Taking advantage of the absence of his senior manager, who was on a leave, Yemnul planned the robbery thinking nobody would suspect him, as he was the bank manager. But the long arm of the law caught up with him on Saturday, five days after the audacious robbery.
Cops said that they received a complaint on March 12 from the Canara Bank head that Rs 24 lakh was missing from their lockers. "At first we thought it to be a theft, but after inquiring with all the employees, we found that Yemnul who was responsible for the bank operations had gone on leave since March 10," said a police officer from L T Marg police station.
"He was responsible for day-to-day operations, as the senior branch manager had gone on leave. Only when the senior manager returned, he found out that the cash was missing and informed us," said the cop. Cops suspecting that the theft was an insider's job started probing all the employees.
During the questioning of Jaya Pujari, an employee, they discovered from her that she had witnessed Yemnul leaving the office with two briefcases on March 10. Sensing something amiss as the timing coincided with Yemnul's leave, the cops started looking for him. Cops traced Yemnul, and during a grilling he acknowledged stealing the money, and sending it to his native place in Bangalore. "We have sent a team to Bangalore to recover the money from Yemnul's native place. Yemnul has been granted police custody till March 30," said the police officer.
