Slain IPS officer's wife demands CBI inquiry into death

Aligarh:  Two days after an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Narendra Kumar, was killed when a man driving a tractor ran over him in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, his wife today demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident. The 30-year-old IPS officer was apparently killed for trying to combat illegal mining in the state.
"One day you say it is a murder and the other you don't - this is not acceptable. You might as well keep your mouth shut. I expect a CBI inquiry. If this happens, I will be more than happy and obliged. If someone has done something good for the country, you can't just get hold of the driver and feel that it is enough. You need to start from the roots to eradicate this mafiasm," said Mr Kumar's wife Madhurani Tewatia, who is an IAS officer and is expecting their first child.
Ms Tewatia's comments come after the local police denied that the driver was part of a larger conspiracy to assassinate Mr Kumar, as alleged by his family. One of the senior policemen handling the case, DP Gupta, said that going by eyewitness accounts and evidences available so far, it appears that the driver had no links with the mining mafia.
"If you can't give protection to an officer, you can't expect them to protect your people and state. If this has happened with me, I will definitely follow it up. I won't let it go so easily," Ms Tewatia also said.
Ms Tewatia's demand for a CBI inquiry comes on a day the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh ordered a judicial inquiry to investigate the murder of Mr Kumar.
Mr Kumar was killed on Thursday when a man driving a tractor ran over him.  Mr Kumar had tried to stop the tractor, which was loaded with illegally-mined stones in the Morena district. Mr Kumar spotted the tractor while he was out patrolling. When the driver refused to stop, Mr Kumar got out of his jeep and blocked the tractor's path. The driver ploughed into him. Morena district is rich in stones meant for construction and the sand here is one of the finest in the country.
Mr Kumar was posted at Banmore as a Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) a month ago and had taken on the mining mafia by cancelling several licenses and seizing a number of trucks and tractors engaged in illegal quarrying.

Ministry of corporate affairs orders DLF inquiry

New Delhi: 

The Corporate Affairs Ministry has ordered inspection into the books of accounts of realty major DLF in view of complaints received from investors regarding company's accounts.

"We have ordered the Regional Director (North) to carry out inspection under Section 209 of the Companies Act. There were several complaints from investors alleging that there are anomalies in the company's books," a senior official said.

Under section 209 of the Act, companies are required to maintain "at its registered office proper books of account" and the MCA has the power to call and scrutinise those books. An e-mail sent to DLF remained unanswered despite repeated attempts.

The sources further added that the Securities and Exchanges Board of India (Sebi), too, has sent a reference to the MCA in this regard.

DLF, the country's largest realty firm, is already facing a probe by market regulator Sebi on an allegation that DLF has duped a city-based businessman of Rs 34 crore in collusion with its associate firm Sudipti Estates.

Sebi is carrying out investigation of DLF, to check for violations, if any, of the provisions of the erstwhile Sebi (Disclosure and Investor Protection) Guidelines, 2000, by the company.

In August last year, competition watchdog CCI had imposed a penalty of Rs 630 crore for abuse of dominant market position.

It also issued a 'cease and desist' order against imposing unfair conditions on the buyers of its flats. DLF had challenged the CCI order with the Competition Appellate Tribunal (COMPAT), which had stayed CCI's order.

Porn-and-politics inquiry a half-hearted attempt?

Bangalore:  After three ministers were caught watching porn on a cellphone in the Karnataka Assembly, a committee was set up of seven MLAs to investigate the incident. The ministers - Lakshman S Savadi, CC Patil and J Krishna Palemar had to resign - were forced to resign by their party, the BJP.  The seven MLAs who are meant to interrogate them seem to lack real interest in their assignment.
The committee has seven MLAs - four from the BJP. The other three members, all from Opposition parties, are boycotting the investigation because they believe the ex-ministers should also be made to quit as MLAs. So far, the trio has been asked not to attend the Assembly till the inquiry against them is completed. The report is expected to be delivered to the Speaker on March 13.
The ex-ministers were caught by a private TV channel named Suvarna News. So far, Karnataka allowed TV channels to cover assembly proceedings, a rule it has changed after the scandal erupted. The editor of Suvarna was questioned by the inquiry committee yesterday. "Only the BJP MLAS (on the committee) asked me questions," Hameed Pallya of Suvarna told NDTV.
That means that the inquiry against the BJP trio is being handled exclusively by other BJP MLAs.
