Birthday boy Emraan Hashmi's a busy man

This is perhaps the busiest year for Emraan Hashmi. Jannat 2 opens in the theatres on May 4, followed by Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai (June 8) and Vikram Bhatt’s Raaz 3 (August 31). Percept Picture’s Raftaar, which was re-titled Play and now is called Rush, is also finally complete, after a gruelling schedule.

“We wrapped up the 10-day schedule in five. Even though it’s been delayed, Rush is a special film and I reckon it should be out later this year,” says Emraan, who will start Ghanchakkar around August-September, Vishal Bharadwaj and Ekta Kapoor’s Daayan mid-year and Murder 3 towards the year end.

There’s also talk of a Karan Johar and Ekta Kapoor co-production to be directed by Rensil D’Silva and a Yash Raj Film with Parmeet Sethi.

“Till a film is signed, sealed and delivered, I don’t like speaking about it,” Emraan smiles, when you bring up these two films, but he says that he has lots of other exciting films already on his plate.

“Jannat 2 will open another can of worms, Shanghai is a kind of metamorphosis that heroes wouldn’t normally risk and Rajkumar Gupta had the whole room laughing during a three-hour narration of Ghanchakkar,” he reminisces. “Daayan is a brilliant script and gives the supernatural thriller a paradigm shift that makes it a film impossible to box. Murder is a surreal franchise and we plan to take your darkest fears to the next level in part 3.”

He had plans of turning producer by the end of this year but Emraan says that while he’s keen to expand his job profile, right now it’s too much stress. “There are so many releases and so many films coming up that it’s impossible to branch out now. Maybe in two years, I will be able to live this dream too.”

Meanwhile Emraan turns 33 today and after a lot of wheeling-dealing has managed to get the day off to spend with wife Parveen and two-year-old son Ayyan at a farmhouse in Karjat. “Tomorrow, it will be work as usual,” he smiles.

Who’s busy, who’s not
Akshay Kumar has seven projects — Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore, Special Chhabis, Khiladi 786, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2 and Joker, as well as his own production Oh My God.

Emraan Hashmi also has seven films in hand — Jannat 2, Shanghai, Rush, Raaz 3, Murder 3, Dayaan, Ghanchakkar.

Hrithik Roshan is so far the least busy star with only his home production Krissh 3 to shoot. He may take on another project soon, though.

I finally got to fire a real gun: Emraan Hashmi

According to a recent newspaper report, India has replaced China as the world’s top importer of arms between 2007 and 2011. China is a joint third with Pakistan, with 5 per cent imports, South Korea marginally ahead with 6 per cent, while 70 per cent of India’s total defense requirements
are being imported. Emraan Hashmi’s eagerly awaited sequel, Jannat 2 talks about this changing face of gun trade.

His filmmaker uncle Mahesh Bhatt explains that while researching the subject, they learnt from the Delhi police that nawabs and kings had employed skilled artisans to make arms for them to wage frequent wars, but the British banned them, wanting exclusive control over arms and ammunition in India. Centuries later, with sales of arms escalating, the next generation was tapped for their skills and made part of the flourishing illegal trade.

“Jannat 2 will open a can of worms, much like its predecessor did in 2008,” promises Emraan. “Four years ago, a story about match-fixing may have seemed like pure fiction, but today, after a string of headline-grabbing front page reports, there’s a sense of déjà vu. What you see and read in 2011-2012, was all said in our film four years ago. That’s exactly how it’s going to be with Jannat 2 as well. ”

While the subject is dark and real, the actor insists Jannat 2 is a commercial film but admits that like with the earlier film, he took a break from shoots to travel with director Kunal Deshmukh to meet with people connected with the trade and the police.

“As part of the research, I even got to fire a gun,” says Emraan who since he was a child, has been hooked to action movies. “I used to fire toy guns earlier. Firing the real thing was a high, but I also realised how much power it puts into your hands. It is used by the police to protect, but if it gets into the wrong hands, it can destroy too. It brings out the dark side in some people and can become a fatal obsession.”

Why Emraan would never accept awards

Emraan Hashmi is never seen at Bollywood award functions, whether as a guest, performer or winner. This year, he was up for a Stardust Award in the category of Best Thriller/Action Actor for Murder 2 (2011) and had two nominations at the Apsara Awards — Best Actor in a Leading Role (Murder 2) and Best Actor In A Supporting Role (The Dirty Picture). He didn’t win and he’s not surprised. In fact, Emraan says that if he were to get an award now, he would not accept it.

“Audience appreciation matters more to me than this recognition. And I’d be happy if I could pass on an award meant for me to a contemporary who values it more and takes days out of his schedule every year to attend these functions,” he reasons, adding that he had once attended an awards night, but walked out after 20 minutes. “I know it was wrong to get up and leave but I just couldn’t sit through it anymore. So rather than insult a function again, I’ve decided not be there.”

Emraan, however, isn’t averse to performing at a show even though he hasn’t for the past three years because of time constraints: “Other actors need only a few hours of rehearsal but I have two left feet and require a few days’ practice. If I can make time for that towards the end of the year, you’ll see me on stage,” he says, adding that he wouldn’t agree to be a performer just to make money. “If that were the only criterion, I would have taken on projects of producers who were willing to pay me three times my market rate. Whether it’s a film or a function, I don’t want to do something I don’t believe in.”

After nine years, Emraan seems to have finally made the A-list, with director Karan Johar saying that he’s a huge fan. He’s been signed on by Vishal Bhardwaj and Ekta Kapoor for Daayan, has three sequels — Jannat 2, Raaz 3D and Murder 3 — with the Bhatt camp lined up. There’s also talk of him doing a Dharma film to be directed by Rensil D’Souza and a YRF production with Parmeet Sethi as director. “I’m flattered by Karan’s remark, but for me the benchmark of success is the box-office,” Emraan says. “I’ve never yearned to be on any A, B or C list. It’s enough if I’m accepted by the audience.”
